Tephrocactus
These were in the Opuntia genus however they've now got their own. They range from southern Argentina to northern Peru & at an altitude of up to 11 500'.
Tephrocactus articulatus have a number of varieties with some being without spines but having the glochids.
These come from western Argentina & as you can see from this ones spines, their common name is Paper Spine Cactus.
The picture on the left-hand side was taken in 2002 with the other one taken in 2005.
