'Admiral' Gunboat Competition III

April Update

Prior to reading this, some of you might be thinking that either your or my server did not send you the 'April Update'. Given the date of this e-mail, you will be able to see that I did not write it at the right time. The reason is a number of things, with one being that Sally & I are getting married on the 8th Aug 2007 & for the last few weeks; we had to arrange a number of things. Add to that, my new job takes a lot of my time & last Friday was my 44th Birthday. Based on that I hope you will understand that the 'April Update' was not that important until now.

Perhaps based on the above paragraph, you might think that what I am about to write is me being like, the pot calling the kettle black. To those that do not understand the phase, the pot calling the kettle black, perhaps once you have read the section below you might understand.

Anarchy

You'll see below the current Supply Centres (SCs) owned by the respective countries but sadly, you will see a number of Anarchy countries. I always ask players, that go into Anarchy, to provide me with a reason. In the game's I'm GMing, less players have given a reason as opposed to those that have not. To the players who have not given me a reason, consider this. By asking to play in 'Admiral' you committed to playing until you won the Competition or your country was eliminated. Many people have been involved in this Competition together with those playing in the game you were playing in. Your commitment to them shows you could not care less & to me, give up playing Diplomacy until you understand the level of effort that is included!

Some players have written to me about 'Admiral' Rules for Anarchy & within their e-mails, they have asked or commented on a number of things. Knowing they have not played on the same sites that I generally play on (that includes other players and the GMs), I wrote, in my reply, that I would explain in the 'April Update'. By the way, the two sites were Psychopath (which unfortunately folded and meant all future 'Admiral' will be on ALB & GSB) and Dip2000, which is a well-known and respective site. Their Houserules, for Anarchy players, was used in the 'Admiral' Rules.

The Waiting List was open for about six-weeks. The number of players was about 180, which as you know meant that only the first 175 could play (25 Quarter-Finals). For Spring 1901, if the GM did not receive seven sets of orders, replacement players would be introduced & if I remember correctly, two were. As written in the Rules, that is the only area they will be used. Regarding Anarchy countries, there are a number of factors.

My main reason for playing on Dip2000 was actually based on my first three games on Dip Pouch. I started playing Diplomacy in May 1983 (the day after the draw between Brighton & Hove Albion Vs Manchester Utd in the FA Cup Final) & on and off I continued to play in mainly face to face (F-F) games. In 2001 I found Dip Pouch & played three games. The first game (RE Lee) had one replacement & that seemed Ok. Once that game ended (I was Turkey & was the last player to be eliminated), I chose to play two games at once. One was a normal game with the other being a Gunboat. The Gunboat game (name I cannot remember but I was Germany) had roughly four/five replacements & in the normal game (Jack Dempsey, I think) had three of us who played until our part was over however about ten replacements were used for the other countries. In that game I was France & if I am right, I was again the last player eliminated. Now I am not saying that Dip Pouch is a ridiculous site as I know that the games I was playing in was quite unusual & together with that, the site is after all the largest Diplomacy site but to me, it did show that replacement players are not my cup of tea. I searched on the net & found Dip2000, which itself had a link to Psychopath.

To add to the above, consider other points.

As 180 players wished to play in 'Admiral' III, without knowing the number of Anarchy countries, you cannot guarantee to replace all Anarchy countries & if you cannot do what, you must not introduce it.

I've played in games where there have been replacements & by the very nature of them, games are delayed. The only delay I allowed in 'Admiral' was that given to all players for things like holidays, etc, but I am sure you will agree that is different.

Using other arguments, you have been playing since S01 & the final season is approaching with you close to qualifying to the next round. All of a sudden, the country, whose total Supple Centres (SCs) is just above yours, causes a replacement player to take control of that country. The player in question has not played in this competition but keeps, in those remaining seasons, higher SCs than you have & therefore goes through to the next round. Now granted you must have read the rules (as though many of you have with the 'Admiral' Rules ), which means you were aware but I am sure you will feel let down.

Perhaps changing tact, suppose a player continues to play by submitting to the GMs, all units hold. Those units do the same as Anarchy units.

I hope that the above does explain my view on replacement players & that you do understand that 'Admiral' will never use replacement players unless the season is S01.

Games

Prior to moving onto the current stats on the games, part of the qualifications to the Semis is based on knowing that Anarchy was likely to happen. If you remember 25 1st placed players' go through but due to Anarchy, 24 2nd placed players' go through. The reason behind that is to try to stop Anarchies affecting the whole game.

Remember that if a game is not won, the final season is A12.
