NMR
Introduction
If you don’t know NMR it's an abbreviation for No Moves Received. Anarchy equals two NMRs back-to-back by the same country, which means that the player is out of the game. It's also true that many sites ban the player for playing again unless there was a very good reason.
If a country is in anarchy, the units simply Stand however they can be supported by another country. Obviously if a unit that is in anarchy is beaten by an opponent, the unit is disbanded not retreated.
Why Do It?
Sadly too many players decide not to continue & believe it or not, I've seen it happen when their country was likely to win. Needless to say, real-life problems crop up. That is very different & is usually accepted by the site.
When you enter a site, most mention the length of time a game will last. As an example a one-week season is likely to last for three months, two-week for six months but I've seen a one-month season last for over eighteen months.
Prior to putting your name on a Waiting List you must consider the length of the game. If you feel you might not be able to continue for that length of time, then don't sign-up. If that is the case however you do want to play, try & locate F-F games in your area.
As said in one of the other articles, you have a one in seven chance of winning if the game is won. Obviously there are a large number of draws with me seeing a six-way draw. If you're unlikely to win & the units are small in number, you still have the facility to do a number of things.
The famous word puppet is as the name says. You ally with another country knowing full well you'll not win but they might with your help. Your moves are discussed with the other country & usually two minds are better than one however it's aim is for the ally to increase. In many cases, me being the puppet, the game was unable to be won by my ally. The game ended in a draw & I was one of them in that draw. In some games the puppet lasts for a period of time & then beaten by a stab from their ally. It may not sound good & isn't however by being a puppet rather than going into anarchy certain things are gained, which will be mentioned later.
As far as allying some players never ally with the country that stabbed them. I've been allied with the country that had a go. The reason for that was dependant on which country would be a better ally & in some games it could be that country who stabbed you. Sometimes they ignore you as an ally & continue to beat you into a pulped however in some they agree with your suggestion.
The alternative to being an ally is to battle with any country near you. Again I have done this but it was based on the nature of their communication with me, leaving me not to want to be allies with them.
Tactics?
I've read a number of players saying that NMR is a tactically move. Interesting reading things but during them I haven't seen them saying anything other than can be tactical to NMR. Without them saying it I sat & tried to come up with a tactical way of doing it. I practically gave up as NMR leaves the units standing, which can be done by submitting standing orders. The only thought is whether the non-NMRs players leave them alone to attack someone else who has submitted them. Other than that thought, which I think is silly, I have no idea of any tactical NMR.
Conclusion
As said there are various reasons for not NMRing & then going into anarchy. For those that do, the site willn't entertain any players that goes into anarchy unless a very good reason is explained. Personally I think anyone putting their country into anarchy, for no apparent reason, is acting like a child not getting their own way.
When GMing a game, if a country goes into anarchy I send the player the adjudication & then remove them from my address book. Obviously they're not send further adjudications therefore no experience is gained from them observing the game.
The other reason is that the players lose their good reputation!
