Diplomacy title

The game is exciting, skilful & full of cunning negotiations!

If you haven't played this game, you're missing out. If you've played it & didn't enjoy, there could have been many reasons why but by reading this page, you might decide to try it again.

As an overview of Diplomacy, the game based on Europe at 1901 & there are seven Great Powers. They're Austria-Hungary, England, France, Germany, Italy, Russia & Turkey. A player is the leader of one of those countries.

Regarding England being used not Great Britain is due to an American, many decades ago, invented the game & for reasons unknown to me, England seems to be used by people from that country & not Great Britain. As for this site, for certain variant games I have changed it to Britain but that being said, if a player writes England, that's fine. BTW I was thinking of changing it to Scotland but then there is a variant for that country & soon I'll have it shown here.

The game doesn't use dice therefore you have to plan your objectives & negotiate with the other players, which may become a short or long-term ally. The aim is to win, which means you'll have to control Europe!

For further details, including the rules, a link below will take you to a section, which is aimed & helping you out. One added point is abbreviation, which you'll see & they're; Face to Face is F-F, Play by Mail is PBM & Play by E-mail is PBEM & also the provinces & seas however they'll be a help within the articles.

Contents

I've slightly changed certain aspects below. Stats now have their section & you'll see it below. For those who are unaware, the stats used to be shown within the articles area.

In Easter 2003 'Admiral' Gunboat Competition started with the aim to give players a bit of fun whilst they are trying to become classed as a good Gunboat player. Thankfully many players said they enjoyed it & asked for it to continue & hence it is. Within this link you'll be able to read information about the competition including the rules & if your native language isn't English, don't worry as named players did translate to their language. If interested, click here.

Articles about Diplomacy are intended to give you my view of certain aspects of the game. It's fair to say many people play the game & some might have a different view to mine but I hope you'll find them interesting. One thing I'm sure of is that the game can be classed as a complexes game. I personally think the game isn't & hopefully the articles will make you think I'm right. Articles

Games The noughts & crosses picture is intended to show that games are shown within the link. Most of the games are based on Diplomacy & also its variants but other non-Diplomacy games might soon be within. Links to the 'Admiral' Gunboat Competition & Intimate Diplomacy Tournament games are shown.

Rules & Maps will show rules used for Diplomacy & equally those that have been altered to play on certain Web Sites. The alteration between usual Diplomacy & those used on sites is so you know how to write orders, etc, by using PBEM. In addition to the above, maps are shown. One displays the provinces by using abbreviations whereas the other shows your starting position for armies & fleets. Rules & Maps

Stats Many players like to research stats to give them a clearer idea of games that have been played in the past. Often stats don't give a better view however these do give a good incline into normal games & the Gunboat variant. Tables will show the Openings & Endings but based on countries not players' names.

The Waiting List shows games that are currently able to play. The list will include the type of game, the length of time for the Deadlines & the names of players' waiting. The games which are part of Gunboat will not show the players' real names but it will show the amount waiting. If you like the idea of a game but are unaware of the rules, links to it are shown. Waiting List

Where to Play Where to Play provides a handful of ways to play the game & also other types of games. It includes Web Sites but also mentions how you can play F-F games or learn or both. In case you wonder, none of the above costs money to play however F-F games may to cover any expenditure such as venue.

Intimate Diplomacy Tournament was designed by some of my Diplomacy colleagues but as they don't have a site, it's hosted here. The game itself is a two-player game based on Diplomacy, where each player takes one of the seven major powers of the regular game. Players earn credits according to the number of supply centres held at the end of the Autumn season. The players then use these credits to bid for control of the remaining five great powers for one game year at a time. For more details, click here. Intimate Diplomacy Tournament
