Countries

In the table points are shown with 2 points being for a win, a drawn game equals 1 point & a lose gets 0 points. Sometimes countries weren’t played so in that round you’ll see a hyphen. As for the number after the slash, it shows the number of times that country was played.

Brian Frew France Ally Bain Germany Richard Hucknall Brian Frew S02

Round 1 saw three very close matches. Richard who won IDI was against Lawrence a semi-finalist from last year. The game involved Austria-Hungary versus Russia; both strong and favoured powers and neighbours. Jonathan had the game almost wrapped up in 1903 before Kester slowly came back. And my game against new boy Greg almost ended in a draw as Greg very nearly established a stalemate line around Italy and Austria-Hungary. Brian had no problem disposing of the other newbie and Dip2k icon Ally extremely efficiently!

Lawrence McDonald England Jonathan Langman Turkey Richard Hucknall Draw S09

Round 2’s feature game was the top of the table clash between Richard, the reigning champion, and Kester. Kester playing Austria-Hungary gained the upper hand already in 1902 as Richard playing Turkey probably bid to high for Russia in 1901, and therefore was not able to put enough pressure on Austria-Hungary as Kester managed to control most of the other mercenaries. Brian efficiently dealt with Greg to join Kester to be the only ones undefeated at the top of the table. Again the bidding was the key. With a high credit balance, Brian playing Austria-Hungary managed to control France and easily capture an Italian centre. The other Round 1 winner, Carl, lost against the unflappable Ally and has learnt to bid more aggressively for Germany when playing England against France as the other mercenaries in the first few years do not matter that much. And in an epic match, Lawrence and Jonathan played out a draw in England versus Turkey to both record their first points of the Tournament!

Round 3

Richard Hucknall England Jonathan Langman Austria-Hungary Chris Andrews Draw S06
Lawrence McDonald Russia Kester Bearne Turkey Brian Frew Kester Bearne A01
Greg Pierce Germany Ally Bain Turkey Richard Hucknall Ally Bain A04
Carl Hanich Turkey Brian Frew Germany Richard Hucknall Carl Hanich S04

Three players chose Turkey and Turkey won three times! Kester won with Turkey in very quick fashion to remain undefeated and now on top of the Table by himself as we almost reach the halfway mark of the Tournament. Unfortunately, Lawrence playing Russia forgot to build in A01 which handed the game to Kester. The other two Turkey games were both against Germany. Ally comfortably beat Greg, and Carl also comfortable beat the previously undefeated Brian. That leaves Brian, Carl, and Ally in equal 2nd position and a reasonable shot at the championship. The other game involved last year’s champion Richard securing a draw against Jonathan in England versus Austria-Hungary.

Jonathan Langman Russia Ally Bain Italy Chris Andrews Ally Bain A03

Another exciting Round. This time though all games were won early on. Kester continued his devastating form remaining on top of the Table with another convincing win this time against Brian, playing France versus England. Ally was absolutely brutal playing Italy against Jonathan’s Russia to remain in equal second position. The ID Rookie has lost only his first game when he was still learning the ropes but has been unstoppable since. Carl gained an early advantage to be never bothered as Italy against the luckless Lawrence playing Germany. And Richard, the mighty defending champion was never troubled as Austria-Hungary against France played by Greg who stays in 8th position.

Round 5

Lawrence McDonald Turkey Greg Pierce England Brian Frew Draw S07
Kester Bearne Russia Carl Hanich France Richard Hucknall Draw S07
Jonathan Langman Germany Brian Frew Italy Richard Hucknall Brian Frew S04

Two draws! Kester loses his first point (but still remains undefeated!) and Greg gains his first point! Ally was again in absolutely devastating form to be now only one point behind competition leader Kester. As England, Ally managed to defeat the reigning champion Richard’s Germany after only A02. This was England’s first win of the Tournament. Early tournament leader Brian playing Italy cruised home against Jonathan’s Germany and moves ahead of Richard into 4th place. Lawrence and Greg, playing Turkey versus England, played a long game ending in a predictable draw. And 3rd place Carl kept the rampaging Kester to a draw in France versus Russia.

Round 6

Richard Hucknall Italy Brian Frew Turkey Chris Andrews Richard Hucknall A06
Lawrence McDonald Italy Ally Bain Austria-Hungary Brian Frew Lawrence McDonald S02
Kester Bearne Italy Greg Pearce Russia Richard Hucknall Kester Bearne A03
Jonathan Langman Italy Carl Hanich Austria-Hungary Chris Andrews Jonathan Langman A02

A Round of upsets!! In each game, Italy wins! Jonathan and Lawrence score their first wins; both against Austria and both very quickly in A02!

Ally, Carl, and Brian all had a slight chance of winning the Tournament being in 2nd, 3rd and 4th positions, and all lost their games. In Brian’s case it didn’t matter that he lost as he needed to rely on Kester losing both his last two games and Kester won his Round 6 game against the rookie Greg playing Russia. Therefore with a 3 point lead and only the final round to play, Kester has won IDII. In Ally’s case a win would have seen him stay one point behind, and Ally is playing Kester in the final round, so a win in the final round would have handed the rookie the Tournament had he managed to beat Lawrence. And Ally is playing Russia in Round 7 against a weaker power in England!! What a shame for Ally. Kester has won irrespective of the results of Round 7. Congratulations Kester on a brilliant effort throughout this 10 month Tournament!!

Richard accounted for Brian to get back into 4th position in the only long game of the Round which was Italy versus Turkey. A win in the final round could see the reigning champion finish strongly and should Ally lose, he could finish 2nd!

Round 7

Richard Hucknall France Carl Hanich Russia Chris Andrews Carl Hanich S04
Lawrence McDonald France Brian Frew Russia Richard Hucknall Brian Frew A03
Kester Bearne England Ally Bain Russia Brian Frew Ally Bain S06
Jonathan Langman France Greg Pearce Austria-Hungary Richard Hucknall Jonathan Langman A08

Kester finally loses a game!!! Kester had been undefeated until this final Round and unfortunately failed to make history and remain undefeated for the Tournament. Playing England was always going to be hard against Russia, but with Ally playing Russia it was nigh impossible. Ally started very solidly and always had the edge in the game. The win also gave the ID rookie (but very experienced Diplomacy player) 2nd place in his first ID Tournament. Again, congratulations Kester on winning IDII.

Richard (as France) was up against Carl (as Russia). Both were on 7 points with a win securing third position (or 2nd position had Ally lost to Kester). Russia is probably the better power to play (in F Vs R games) and after A01, it was clear that the reigning champ was not going to get up.

In another France Vs Russia game, Brian (Russia) again proved how tough it is for France to play Russia with a convincing win against Lawrence. Brian’s win also let him sneak ahead of Richard to secure 4th place. Richard therefore ended up in 5th place but as you can see from the table, he was only two wins away from the top. It didn’t help being the reigning champ as I am sure everyone was careful with which power chosen against Richard; for instance Richard never got to play against Germany, clearly the weakest power. I suppose this natural feature keeps the competition table tight as the stronger powers are kept to play against the stronger players. Watch out next season Kester!! His 5th position sees him remain on top of the ID Hall of Fame.

Greg tried hard against Jonathan, in an Austria versus France game, to secure his first win but in the end couldn’t hold on for a draw. In this long match, Jonathan played very well to finish the Tournament strongly with two wins and finish in 6th place. Greg ended up in 8th place behind Lawrence who finished in 7th place.
