Charity

Like many people I strongly believe that we must be aware of those around us & if help is needed, it must be given.

When it comes to charities, people often decide to do certain things like bungee jumping, parachuting, cycling & many more. By doing such an event they ask others to donate money to the charity. In my case the Dublin Marathon is not only for my benefit but equally for a charity I’ve chosen & I’m asking you for a monetary donation.

Moulsham Grange Children’s Centre, Chelmsford, Essex My aim is to help the Moulsham Grange Children’s Centre by giving the donated money to the charity called the Friends of the Children’s Centre.

The aim of Moulsham Grange is to provide Mid-Essex with a paediatric therapy service for children with special needs.

‘Special needs’ is a generic set of words so I’ll try & briefly explain its meaning. Children who need additional help & support to improve their ability to complete everyday tasks that many others may take for granted e.g. standing, walking, communicating with others.

To identify the areas where help is needed, each child is assessed by a team of highly skilled & specialised staff. The team then work closely with the parents & school or nursery to plan an individual programme that will meet the therapeutic needs of the child.

The Friends of the Children’s Centre was established in 1986 to support the patients, parents & staff at Moulsham Grange by raising funds to provide extras for the children that the Health Service can’t provide. These extras range from specialist equipment & toys, to entertainment & balloons for the children’s Christmas Party. The Friends were granted charitable status in 1988 & their Registered Charity number is 800341.

If, having read the above, you’re wondering why I chose this charity; there are a couple of reasons.

The first is that even though none of my family or friends’ children has attended Moulsham Grange, Sally is the Centre’s Administrator. Both Sally & I work in Chelmsford which means we normally use one car to travel to work. If I finish work before her, I go to the Centre & often see children who are patients of Moulsham Grange.

The second reason for choosing Moulsham Grange is that some of the difficulties, being faced by some of the children, are areas which affected me. My auto-biog shows why I’m affected with some of these difficulties however to give you a brief explanation, I was assaulted in 1999 & that caused a serious head injury. Two brain operations were carried out which kept me alive. The problems that the two operations couldn’t fix were things like my inability to read, write & speech. In addition were certain areas of my memory which will never be fixed.

I hope that you do agree that money donated to the Friends of Children’s Centre is very worthwhile & that you’re more than happy to donate. The amount of money to donate is entirely up to you but the more the merrier.

This is only based on UK taxpayers. Gift Aid is one of the simplest & most effective ways of giving to charity. Using Gift Aid means that for every pound you give, the charity will receive an extra 28 pence from the Inland Revenue. This means that for a £10 Gift Aid donation, the Friends of the Children’s Centre will receive £12.80.

I would like to receive an e-mail (e-mail addr has an AT not @ so swap it back) from anyone who donates money & to those that are UK taxpayer, please write your name, home address (incl. postcode) & your agreement to the Friends of the Children’s reclaiming tax rebate on your donation. NB all you pay is your donation; the rest comes from the Inland Revenue.

After the Dublin Marathon (30th Oct) I’ll be collecting money & very soon I’ll be handing it in to the Friends of the Children’s Centre, Moulsham Grange, Moulsham Street, Chelmsford, Essex, CM2 9AH.

To show the type of equipment that the Friends of the Children's Centre would like to buy, the picture below shows some of them.

Equipment needed

Once the Friends of the Children’s Centre have decided what will be bought, I'll be told & will inform you.

Currently (26th Oct) the pledge, excluding Gift Aid, is £1 799 so PLEASE donate!

Soon I'll mention the amount that was donated.
