"Run the Marathon"?
"You must be joking"!"Good title but what does that mean"?
"Well hopefully the following will explain".Prior to the 8th March 2006 I was smoking between 20 - 40 cigarettes a day. The cost of a packet was going up to higher than £4 & to me that was too high. I therefore decided to try & give up smoking with the initial thought being first, save money & then secondly, to improve my health. Yes, I know my numbered preferences sounds silly but as a rough guess, if you're a smoker you might see what I was thinking.
It took less than two-weeks for me to break the addictive side of ciggies however my weight went up to 15 stones. To our American friends that's 210 lbs & to our European colleagues it's 95.25 kg but to those who don't understand either, I was bloody well over-weight! As my height is 5' 9", 15 stone isn't good. Even though I was trying to eat less it simply didn't work.

Sally & I were planning to weed some of the beds however it was raining on the 23rd April & neither of us felt like working in our garden. I turned on BBC1 & the London Marathon was being shown. When watching it I thought about me running in it next year & using that to lose weight. Knowing 26 miles is a long way & my current health not being too good, I felt it best to think it through.
To give you a rough idea of my health, at that stage, the last time I played a 90 minute football (soccer) match was 1993 & the last time I played squash was 1996. With the exception of Sally & I occasionally going-out to a Modern Jive dance, I wasn't doing anything else to improve my health.
Perhaps the positive side of my health was what happened when I was an in-patient at Broomfield Hospital in 1999 & then in 2000 at Oliver Zangwill Rehabilitation Centre. In both I had to show how fit I was & given my then age I was able to show that I had a reasonable amount of fitness. If you're unaware of me being in hospital for such a long time, read my biog as that will explain it.
Regarding the food I eat, it was & is good as I don't eat rubbish grub like cheap fast-food burgers, etc. Adding all the above & that on the 4th May 2006 my age would be 43 you can see why I needed to think about it or perhaps one should say that I NEED to do it without thinking.
The thinking didn't take too long as on the Tuesday I went to a sports shop in Braintree, Essex & bought a pair of trainers.

By reading some of the pages you'll see that an injury, or even injuries, have slowed down my running & from Nov 2006 to now, I've only managed a handful of jogging. The injuries didn't come from running.
Instead of having a very long page I've created a number of links to various pages. The underlined word or words should explain themselves that is within that link. If not, just press it & you'll then be able to see that's within it.
My aim is to help the Moulsham Grange Children’s Centre by giving the donated money to the Charity called the Friends of the Children's Centre. PLEASE SUPPORT IT!
Like other diaries this Running Diary shows the days I ran & how well or bad it went.
Training for my first marathon, Dublin Programme shows the training programme I set for myself. It also has a picture of the Dublin Marathon's route.
I told many friends about me giving up smoking & then to get fit, running long distances. Some replied & Comments from Friends has them listed.
On Good Friday there is a Sudbury Fun Run & in 2007 I managed to take pictures of some of the Sudbury Joggers who took part.
Marathon Links gives a brief description of some Web sites & of course a link to it.
